September 15 is the International Day of Democracy and, from the GATE Center, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Chairman of the Advisory Board, reflects on the crisis in liberal Western democracies. To understand its causes, we must ask ourselves if this crisis is not motivated by the economic, social and political growth of regions such as Asia and the Middle East and by the change this has brought about in the international system.

The dynamics between East and West have changed and, as a consequence, we must emphasize dialogue between the two, to understand how political systems other than those we are accustomed to work and to resolve the challenges we face.
