Roundtable: How to reconcile drug and development policies?

May 8, 2024 | Events

The debate on drugs and drug trafficking has been predominantly focused on Latin America for years. However, recent events in Barbate, Malaga and Murcia highlight the urgency to stop averting our gaze and jointly address this common challenge. To this end, GATE Center, in collaboration with the Global Governance Research Centre of the University of Salamanca, and D2Innolab Global Innovation Lab on Drug Policy & Development, is organising a roundtable to give voice to the reflections of leading professionals in the sector. In addition, on this special occasion, the think tank’s latest working paper “For a change in global drug policy: the necessary development approach”, written by Francisco Javier Sagredo Fernández, will be presented and will serve as a framework for the discussion.

The event will provide a unique opportunity to listen to renowned experts such as Daniel Radío, secretary of the National Drug Board of Uruguay; Felipe Tascón, National Director of the Illicit Crop Substitution Programme of Colombia; José María Asencio, dean judge at the 11th Criminal Court of Barcelona and associate professor of Criminal Law at the University of Barcelona; Constanza Sánchez Avilés, researcher, analyst and expert lawyer in public drug policy and the author of the paper himself, Javier Sagredo, who is Director of D2 INNOLAB and associate researcher at the Centre for Research on Global Governance at the University of Salamanca.

Susanne Gratius, academic coordinator of GATE Center, will lead the conversation, addressing topics for reflection such as the impact of drug policies on human rights and sustainable development, using examples from case studies such as Colombia and Uruguay. The effectiveness of penal, penitentiary and administrative responses to drugs in Spain and their consequences will also be evaluated, among other topics.

The event “How to reconcile drug and development policies” will take place on Friday 10 May 2024 at 17:00 at the Centre for Technological Innovation for Human Development of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Av. Complutense s/n. Ciudad Universitaria, 28040 Madrid).

The event is open to the public and can be attended in person or followed online.
