Jun 19, 2024 | Events

The Symposium on Sino-European Relations, held on 11 June 2024, has established itself as a crucial event for strengthening Sino-European relations. Jointly organised by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, the European Union Association of China and the GATE Center of Spain, this meeting served as a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities in Sino-European exchange and their impact on bilateral relations.

The symposium was attended by leading figures in the field of international relations, including Liu Qibao, President of the European Union Association of China; Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs; José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former Prime Minister of Spain; and Yao Jing, Chinese Ambassador to Spain. These leaders, along with 20 other invited diplomats, academics and business leaders, addressed critical issues such as the mutual policies of the European Union and China, Spain’s approach during its EU presidency, and the current challenges facing these international relations.

The main objective of the event was to enhance understanding and cooperation between China and Europe through an in-depth analysis of existing policies and strategies and the development of new avenues for more robust and stable exchanges in areas such as economics, culture and education. In addition, the symposium facilitated a reflection on the impact of China-US relations on China-EU dynamics and explored ways to promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields.

This symposium has therefore stood out not only for the relevance of its debates and the quality of its participants, but also for its ability to foster a constructive dialogue that could lead to common actions and mutual benefits in the near future.

Opening speeches by distinguished personalities such as José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain (2004-2011), Liu Qibao, Vice-Chairman of the 13th CPPCC National Committee and Chairman of the China-EU Partnership, and Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, marked the start of an enriching and multidimensional debate.

In the first phase of the event, topics such as strategic stability and changes in the global geopolitical environment were addressed. Keynote speakers included Inma Rodríguez-Pinero and Fabian Zuleeg. Daniel Romero-Abreu Kaup, President of the GATE Center, closed this phase. All of them emphasised the importance of multilateral cooperation and strategic analysis.

In the second phase, moderated by Mr. Zhang Fengyi, President of Gate Center Asia, the discussion focused on economic and commercial cooperation and humanistic exchanges, where Alicia Tamames highlighted the investment opportunities for Chinese companies in Europe.

The symposium culminated in a powerful closing speech by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who underlined the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration as fundamental to a stronger and more resilient Sino-European relationship.
