Vietnam and other new Asian players

The countries of Southeast Asia and, more specifically, the union formed by ASEAN are becoming increasingly important not only on the Asian continent, but also globally.

Rafael Galán del Río, ‘Perpe’, our Economic Area Director, analyzes the case of Vietnam. Between 2000 and 2009 the Vietnamese economy grew by 6.9% each year, exactly three percentage points more than the world as a whole.

In cumulative terms, Vietnam’s economy has grown by 286 % (almost 4 times) since 1999, compared to 116 % global growth. In addition, the Asian country has been able to position itself strongly and integrate rapidly into global trade, as evidenced by the many free trade agreements signed in recent years.
