Daniel Romero-Abreu Kaup

Chairman of GATE Center

Daniel Romero-Abreu Kaup is president and founder and has +20 years of experience in reputation management, developing communication, public affairs, and influence strategies for companies, multilateral organizations, governments, and opinion leaders focused on achieving tangible objectives. Throughout his career, he has developed a broad international vision advising clients in more than 50 countries on how to align communication and public affairs with business strategy to impact the bottom line.
As a passionate entrepreneur, Romero-Abreu has supported companies and organizations in various stages of growth to develop their business from his experience and expertise. He is a lawyer and economist by ICADE. Holds a master’s degree from Harvard Business School (Owner and President Management Program). He is Spanish and German. Father of three children. President of the Eugenio Hermoso Foundation and director of Komvida Organic Kombucha.

Feng Yi Zhang

Co Chairman of GATE Center

Feng Yi Zhang is the Chairman of T Capital Group and Teng Shi Technology Group. In addition, he founded BG Capital, is affiliated with the France-Asia Foundation, and is a member of the Shanghai Young Leaders Organization. Feng Yi Zhang studied at Harvard Business School.

María Paula Ballesteros

Associate Collaborator of the Area of Institutional Geopolitics

María Paula Ballesteros is from Rosario, Argentina. She has a degree in Political Science, specialising in management and public planning from the National University of Rosario (UNR) and a master’s degree from the same university. She has an advanced diploma in education in virtual environments and teaches in various undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the UNR and the Universidad del Noroeste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, for which she has also published several articles and papers.

With a solid background in governmental affairs and institutional relations, she has held several strategic management positions in the executive branch of local and provincial governmental areas and has advised business and political leaders. She has also been an advisor to political campaigns for president, governor, mayor and various legislative positions. Additionally, she has worked as a consultant in different projects for CONICET, IDB, IT companies, among others.

Matías Mongan

Matías Mongan holds a PhD in Law, Government and Public Policy from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, a Master’s degree in Human Rights, Interculturality and Development from the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina.


At this university he is a guest lecturer in the subject “International Relations”, and has participated in R&D&I projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, as well as having authored and coordinated several books and articles.

José Antonio Alonso Rodríguez

José Antonio Alonso Rodríguez holds a PhD in Economics and is a Professor of Applied Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He has served as a member of the UN Committee for Development Policy (2007–2018), the European Advisory Committee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (2012–2014), the High-Level Group of Wise Persons on the European Financial Architecture for Development (2019), and the International Commission of Experts on Financing for Development.

His work has been published in an extensive range of specialized journals. His most recent books include Trapped in the Middle?: Developmental Challenges for Middle-Income Countries, Oxford University Press, 2020 (co-edited with J.A. Ocampo); and El futuro que habita entre nosotros. Pobreza infantil y desarrollo (The Future That Dwells Among Us: Child Poverty and Development), Galaxia Gutenberg, 2023.

Angélica Saraiva Szucko

Angélica Saraiva Szucko holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Brasília (UnB). She has served as a professor at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) in Goiânia, Brazil, and at the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogotá, Colombia.

She is a member of the Observatory of Regionalism, the GRIDALE network (Reflection Group on Integration and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean), and the Center for Global Studies (UFG). Furthermore, she serves as an associate researcher at UnB and has authored numerous articles and book chapters.

Gustavo Palomares

Director of the General Gutiérrez Mellado University Institute, Jean Monnet Professor (European Chair) of International Relations at UNED, and professor at the Diplomatic School of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEUEC). He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at UNED and as President of the Institute for High European Studies.

From 1988 to 1992, he was the manager of the Spanish Federal Council of the European Movement, and from 2000 to 2006, he served as the director of the European research project “Internal and External Security.” Subsequently, in 2007 and 2008, he was the coordinator of the sixth area regarding CFSP/CSDP (Common Foreign and Security Policy/Common Security and Defence Policy) within the European Council’s “Horizon 2030” Expert Group.

Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal

Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal works at EDRi (European Digital Rights). She is a professor of International Relations at Sciences Po Paris and Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M). She holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and is a member of several research groups. She has experience in the think-tank sector, primarily as the coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa Panel at Fundación Alternativas.

Her research focuses on critical perspectives in International Relations, particularly concerning the Middle East, historical Palestine, and European Union policy toward the Mediterranean and the Global South, as well as the impact of technology on global dynamics. In 2022, she published the book Palestine: Occupation, Colonization, Segregation (Catarata).

Xulio Ríos

Xulio Ríos is an advisor to Casa Asia and Director Emeritus of the Observatory of Chinese Politics. A regular contributor to various media outlets and specialized journals, he also serves on the scientific boards and editorial committees of several sinological publications. A guest professor and consultant for various academic institutions in Spain, China, and Latin America, he has authored over twenty books on China.

He received the Cátedra China Award (2018) and the Casa Asia Award (2021). His latest work (2024) is: 中国:迈向现代化新征程 (China: Towards the Final Phase of Modernization: Ideas and Reflections on the New Era).

Florence Cassam Chenai

Florence Cassam Chenai won the 1st GATE Center Award for Development Studies in Africa and Asia, presented during the VII International Congress on Development Studies held in May 2024 at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and organized by the Spanish Network for Development Studies (REED). The author has worked for over twenty years in the field of international aid across the African continent (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, United Nations, NGOs).

She holds a PhD in International Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid. Her research focuses on the Sahel region, which is affected by multiple and prolonged crises, with a specific emphasis on analyzing the narratives of international aid and political actors.
