GATE Lunch with Brett Bruen: Europe after the US elections
On 21 November, the GATE Center was honoured to host an event with Brett Bruen, President of the Global Situation Room and former Director of Global Management at the White House under President Barack Obama.
Part of the GATE Center team, led by our President, Daniel Romero-Abreu, enjoyed a lunch with Mr. Bruen in which an interesting discussion was held under the theme ‘Europe after the US elections’. During this fruitful conversation, Brett Bruen, recently named one of the most influential voices in US public affairs by Washingtonian magazine, shared with GATE Center his perspective on the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House on 20 January and the impact of the Republican leader taking the reins of one of the world’s major hegemonic powers.
All the voices present agreed that this new legislature opens the way to a reshaping of the international chessboard, reopening old issues and putting new challenges and opportunities on the table. This is particularly significant in a world that is already in turmoil, with two active armed conflicts that leave no state indifferent. Mr Bruen’s remarks pointed to the keys for both Europe and the Global South to be able to navigate the situation in the most prosperous way possible, with alliances and a commitment to multilateralism being indispensable tools for strengthening resilience.
Undoubtedly, this is a major challenge that requires greater twinning and cooperation between countries to compensate for the realist vision and tough policies of the new Trump administration. From GATE Center we take note of this mandate and we put all our work and capabilities to this end, taking advantage of this new opportunity to collaborate in the construction of a fairer and more equitable world.
